Swedish Massage

Swedish massage is the most commonly used massage treatment in Europe today. It combines techniques of gentle effleurage to sooth and warm, deeper petrissage to relax muscles, tapotement to break down fatty tissues and improve the circulation and friction and vibration movements to treat spastic muscle, it is also a good starting point to determine areas of the body that need extra attention.

Swedish massage applies softer strokes on the bonier, more delicate parts of the body, and uses stronger strokes where muscle is thicker. This makes it a fantastic relaxation technique.

Besides the calming benefits, Swedish massage is good for:

- Easing muscular strain by flushing out toxins

- Improving circulation by increasing oxygen flow in the blood

- Helping to keep ligaments and tendons supple

- Stimulating the nervous system

- Reducing emotional and physical stress.

In addition, Swedish Massage can cause the release of endorphins, the body’s natural painkillers – into the brain and central nervous system. The release of muscular tension also helps to unblock and equalise the general flow of life energy in the body (known by different names in different cultures as vital force, bio-energy, c’hi, prana, ki, etc).

Henrik Ling is the inventor of Swedish Massage or at least the conduit through which it was brought to the world. Born in 1776 in Ljunga Sweden he grew up to become a medical gymnastic practitioner.

In the early 19th century, Sweden and the Swedish population was in lamentable shape. Sweden had transformed from a solid European power to a shadow of its former glory, having lost much of its original territory. Doctors who had a relatively progressive and modern grasp of Western medical science, and Ling who wasn’t a doctor or even educated in any field of science was a controversial character. His ambition was to do all that he could in order to craft Sweden into a strong and healthy nation in body, mind and spirit.

The Royal Gymnastic Central Institute was founded in 1813 in the great Swedish city of Stockholm. The Institute was the first place on the face of the Earth to concentrate entirely on training gymnastic instructors. Having a deep and positive faith in the healing and therapeutic effects of massage and training he attracted a number of physicians to his institute. Swedish massage proliferated fast and not just throughout Stockholm or Sweden but Europe and eventually the rest of the world.

Ling's thoughts manifest in his practices in turn had a massive effect on healthcare in the later half of the 1900’s. A famous quote from an American traveller written around 1901: "A true Swede believes that exercise cures all. If you visit a Swedish doctor in all probability he will prescribe an exercise program and send you to a massage facility rather than a visit to the pharmacy".

Hot Stones Massage

Hot Stone Massage is a very specialized holistic treatment that uses smooth stones gently heated in hot water over about an hour. The stones are usually black basalt which is a volcanic rock, due to their thermal properties, they retain heat for a long period of time.

The heat released slowly from the Hot Stones is very relaxing and also helps to release tension in muscles. The stones vary in size and shape and are placed on specific areas of the body, with varying amounts of pressure applied to them. This is said to clear the meridian pathways of the body as well as other spiritual connotations. Despite these more spiritual beliefs, what is known is that the heat and pressure help to loosen the muscles, reducing tension.

Massage oils are used during the Hot Stones Massage as with most other types of treatment. Often Hot Stones will also be used in conjunction with aromatherapy oils for a complete and completely indulgent massage. As well as other oils, different massage techniques can be used with the Hot Stones in order to best help and heal the patient.

In addition to the training required by most other types of massage therapy, Hot Stone Massage also requires quite a bit of equipment. Obviously the rocks are essential and being volcanic they are not common place, certainly in the UK. Heating equipment and protective cases are also required and due to the additional cost of equipment, Hot Stone Massages costs a little more than a standard treatment.

Deep Tissue Massage

The Deep Tissue Massage we offer here at our Salon in Maidstone, Kent, is unique, tailored to your needs. Our Therapists are experts at combining techniques to relieve and dispose of uncomfortable Muscular Tension during this form massage.

Ideal for relieving the source of your tension, whether it is caused by Sports, Posture, Stress, Injury or Muscle Gain. A Deep Tissue Massage will gradually (not painfully!) soften crunchy shoulders, strengthen and lengthen tired or overworked muscles and leave you feeling revitalized, at ease and with a freer posture.

How it Works

Deep Tissue Massage works by slowly penetrating the layers of muscle tissue, to reach and relieve Deep Muscular Tension, quite often the cause of chronic pain, poor posture or restricted mobility. An Experienced Massage Therapists will warm your Muscles first using Swedish Massage, they may ask you to perform some movements in order to trace the pattern of tension throughout the body down the trains of fascia and locate 'problem areas'. The Therapist will then use a combination of Deep Tissue Massage Techniques, such as NMT, MFR, Frictions, Muscles Stripping, STR, CTM, PNF and Muscle Energy Techniques, gradually working Deeper to work away ‘surface tension’ and reach the ‘knots’ or adhesions that lie beneath, often in the back, neck, shoulders, legs, pecs and glutes.

The Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage

The Deep Tissue Massage will help relieve tension deep within the muscles. Tense muscles can restrict oxygen and nutrients and lead to swelling and a build up of toxins, Deep Tissue Massage drains excess fluid and encourages the blood and lymph circulate effectively by releasing hard tension caused by tightened and knotted muscles fibres, ligaments or tendons and a build up of fascia, the connective tissue that can gather and tighten around tense areas. It is particularly important to ensure you drink plenty of water after a Deep Tissue Massage, you may also be advised to do some stretches to help correct any postural problems.

Deep Tissue Massage is also effective at lengthening ‘short muscles’, often represented as tight hamstrings or pectorals which can be the cause of further postural problems. Not only can Deep Tissue Massage offer instant relief, some people comment on feeling 'lighter' and 'free-er', relieving symptoms of pain, poor posture, lack of mobility, tightness in the muscles and stress. It is both corrective and relaxing.

Sports Massage

Sports Massage is growing in notoriety as more and more people are turning to Sports Massage therapists to treat sports injuries. Sports massage is not strictly a holistic therapy as it does specifically treat individual physical problems rather than focusing on the whole person. Sports Massage can be used to help aid recovery and enhance performance for an individual.

A Sports Massage therapist must have a detailed knowledge of the muscular and skeletal systems as well as general physiology or anatomy. It is through understanding these systems, exercise and the person that the therapist is able to so effectively treat people. Because of this Sports Massage therapy is being integrated into many fields of professional sporting and athletic training.

But you do not having to be training for a marathon to benefit from a Sports Massage. Sports Massage can benefit most people, especially if you have an injury caused through overusing the muscles. As overuse of muscles can cause damage to muscles and tissues in the body, left unchecked this can reduce your performance or cause lasting pain. Through effective Sports Massage these problems can be overcome, and you can carry on as you were.

During a Sports Massage the therapist will use oils to reduce friction on the skin as with almost all massage therapy. Aromatherapy oils can also be used to enhance the experience and add a new depth to the treatment.

Everyone receiving a Sports Massage will undergo a consultation first in order to identify the needs of the individual and a program planned out based upon it. A skilled Sports Massage therapist should be able to identify the ideas that need the most attention and focus on them. Sports Massage keeps you healthier and is also a very relaxing and therapeutic for of massage therapy.

Some of the benefits of Sports Massage are detailed below:

Reduce stress and tension
Address specific injuries and physical problems
Reduce muscle tension
Enhance physical performance

Indian Head Massage

Indian Head Massage is a revitalising therapy that relieves tension in the head, neck, shoulders, upper back and arms.

The Indian Head Massage Therapist uses a variety of techniques without oil to literally lift tension from the scalp, works across the temples and  brow bone, loosens the ears, jaw and neck muscles, stimulates pressure points across the head, face and neck and into the trapezius muscles that connects out head and neck to our shoulders and spine, a common place for tension to build, particularly in office workers.

Expect to feel your stress dissolve and aches and pains melt away as the Indian Head Massage Therapist softly manipulates the muscles so that they are in a healthy position, she will gently rub the areas that stimulate blood flow into the whole muscle and give firm stretches to ease tightness, carefully manoeuvring your posture for maximum release.

You will be seated on comfortable chair with your lower back supported and encouraged to relax, the therapist may ask you to take some deep breaths to release tension from your posture as she comfortably adjusts your posture with very slight movements.

Your Indian Head Massage therapist usually works over clothes as the technique is built around gentle movements and friction which require no oil or skin contact to be effective.

This is a fantastic treatment to take before work or in a lunch break as you will feel more awake and alert afterwards, with more essential fluids such as lymph and blood reaching your brain, it can soften the shoulders for a more effective posture, meaning you are able to perform at your best and without any troublesome aches and pains.
